The first go-around of Battle of the Brewers is officially over and our congratulations go out to Shamrock Brewing in Pueblo, the final winner! Shamrock made their way through three great rounds with beers made by Jason Beuhler. In the first round they were paired against Pikes Peak Brewing, in a close call match up using the random ingredients of Raspberry and Pumpkin. In round two, Shamrock defeated Rockyard Brewing using Ginger and Almonds. In the finals they met Lone Tree Brewing and came out on top. The final beer was made with a bottle of red wine per 5 gallons, and the use of some kind of wood (but not oak). In this round, Lone Tree put together a base beer that was a malty red ale with Spanish Tempranillo, hickory, and cherry wood. Shamrock's base beer was a strong Stout, used Merlot and aged with 35 year old cherry wood.
I would like to send my thanks to Jason Beuhler and Shamrock for really putting a lot of effort into this fun little event. I'd also like to thank all the other participating brewers including: Lone Tree Brewing, who also made it to the finals, Rockyard Brewing, Phantom Canyon Brewing, Kevin Beity Kraft Beer, Pikes Peak Brewing, Yak and Yeti, and Rock Bottom. This was a lot of fun and we're already planning the next battle.

Beer Thoughts: River North Hypothesis
Beer Info:
Hypothesis is a Belgian-Style Double IPA from one of Colorado's newest breweries. Normally we only post beers that you can get in the Springs, but this one is currently available in Denver. River North is worth visiting so we thought we'd post it anyway. This one sits at 9% ABV and has 'enough IBUs to sharpen the senses to razor-like acuity...'

Photo Recap: Elevation Beer Co. Meet the Brewer
It's unanimous, Elevation Beer Co. kicks ass. We brought them out last week for our Meet the Brewer series, which we try to hold about once a month. Elevation brought 6 beers, including bottle and draught versions of Apis IV and a Cabernet barrel aged version. I drank a couple of the First Cast IPA's, a very fresh and bubble-gummy IPA with a great hop character. The Imperial Saison and the Mount Blanca Saison were also great. The Front Range BBQ patio was full, and they created a short-rib special with bbq sauce made with Apis IV. They also brought their beers into town, so you can pick up bottles at places like Coaltrain, Weber, and Powers.
Christian Koch and the Elevation crew showed up and gave out a few gifts. Christian talked about the history of Elevation (they're about a month old) and talked about each of the beers, went around to the tables and answered questions. Looks like people had a great time. Stay tuned for more Meet the Brewer events.

Waldo Canyon Fire
I wanted to say a few quick things about the Waldo Canyon Fire and how it will affect what we do here in the next couple weeks. As I write this, almost the entire west side of Colorado Springs, north of Fillmore is on mandatory evacuation. I just watched video on KKTV, and they showed houses on fire on a hill that happened to be just a ways behind Trinity Brewing. In fact, you could see Trinity in the frame, with the houses behind it in the hills. The situation is absolutely horrifying, it's making me sick to my stomach. We have many friends that have evacuated, and a few that have probably lost their houses tonight. The whole thing is surreal.
In light of the fire, talking about beer seems pretty irrelevant. However, with that said, early this week I had already written some posts and have them scheduled to post throughout the week. The reason for this is because I've been planning to visit family, out-of-state, starting tomorrow. I'm going to keep posting as well, as information comes in, and I'm going to post about my travels as well. But I wanted you to know how I feel, and I want you to know that this is not passing over any one of us, it is heavy on us. If you want to read, I will still post when possible.
If you're even still reading the blog during this disaster, it is very likely that many of the events that I've mentioned on the blog will be canceled so take some of the updates with a grain of salt and check into things yourself as well.

A couple beer happenings worth checking out
I just wanted to update you all on a couple great looking beer things that are happening this weekend in our region.
Phantom Canyon Special Tappings
Phantom has three new beers on tap this week. Dampfbier Bavarian Mountain Ale is an old style of beer with roots from the Bavarian Forest that was warm fermented above 70 degrees to give it a phenolic aftertaste. Goose Rider is a West Coast Style IPA that has about 100 IBU's. And Wrong Trousers is an English Brown Ale with flavors of roasted mild coffee, caramel and toffee.
Chardonnay Barrel Aged Saison Man Tapping
Friday, June 29th / 5pm / Trinity Brewing
This spicy Belgian Saison is brewed with rye, oats, flaked wheat, and grains of paradise making a dry and dynamic malt character. Trinity aged this beer on oak chardonnay barrels to create a marriage with the wine and a noteable oak character. A light, barrel aged Belgian for the more complex palates. 5.8% ABV. This beer sounds awesome, I wish I was in town to try it.
Whiskey for My Men, Beer for My Horses
Friday, June 29th / 6-9pm / Colorado Springs Fine Art Center
A cool-looking fundraiser for the Fine Art Center. It includes country music, beer and whiskey tasting, and a Western-themed art show. Pretty awesome. More details are here.
Beers Made By Walking
Hikes are on Saturday and Sunday and might experience some problems due to the fire. The Sunday hike is full, the Saturday hike is almost full and will likely move to a new location because North Cheyenne CaƱon is closed. We'll post photos from the hikes for those of you who can't make it on the hikes. We're doing two hikes, we have eight homebrewers, and we'll do eight beers that are 'beer portraits' of the landscape available in September. Cheers!

Cash Mob to Manitou
![]() |
| Photo from The Gazette website |
On Wednesday at noon there will be a Cash Mob (on twitter use the hashtag #ManitouMob) in Manitou. If you're unaware, a Cash Mob is not a noisy riot, it's a focused coming-together of large groups of people who plan to spend their money in a particular area to help a specific business or local economy. In this case, the mob is organized by the Colorado Springs Community Alliance, and the call is for everyone to head into Manitou and spend your money. Get drinks, food, ice-cream, buy some souvenirs, buy clothes...just buy things and support the town. As beer geeks, we would like to send you to the wonderful bars in town. There are many great bars there, so go to all of them! Some of our favorites include Kinfolks and The Ancient Mariner. We've heard Keg Lounge is great. I'm sure, if they are open, these places would appreciate your business.

Beer Dinner with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales
Jolly Pumpkin Artisinal Ales is a brewery in Michigan that specializes in open-fermentation, oak-aging, wild and sour beers. They are a phenomenal brewery, one of the very best in the country and one of the most reputable with brewers and beer geeks alike.
A couple weeks ago Isaac and I had the privilege of helping The Blue Star and Coaltrain pick out which Jolly Pumpkin beers should be a part of the next beer dinner and which order they should go in. It was one of my favorite drinking sessions ever, the beers were absolutely killer and I believe we all came up with a lineup that will totally knock your socks off. I just got word that the menu is finalized, so I'm sharing all the menu here. In all honesty, this beer dinner will be ridiculously good, I would recommend getting your ticket because this will sell out.

A Beautifully Beery Week in the Region
It's been a while since our region has had such an onslaught of beer happenings. Perhaps it's the weather? I know I'm pretty inspired to go out drinking now that it's hotter and I'm out and about more. So, many of these events are overlapping, so you'll have plenty of options for drinking great beer and no excuses for missing out! Next week will also hold some good events so be sure to check the local event calendar too.
Train Rides and Drinking!
I'm going to put together a comprehensive post on all the beer happenings this week, but I thought that since I hadn't mentioned this one before, it deserved it's own fest. Ever heard of the Rails and Ales Brewfest? It sounds totally awesome. If you're headed south to the San Luis Valley, or if you want a bit of an adventure this Saturday this could really be an interesting thing to do. It's on the same day as our Battle of the Brewer though so we won't be going :(

We've organized two events for next week and we'd love to see you at them both.
We've organized two events for next week and we'd love to see you at them both. They'll be totally different from each other and a whole lot of fun. The first, on Thurs. June 21 is a Meet the Brewer with the brand new Elevation Beer Co. They'll bring their lineup and a couple specialty beers and they'll talk all about the beers with you. This Meet the Brewer will have a different format than previous ones, based on your suggestions, and please note the new venue (Front Range BBQ). The second event, on Sat. June 23, is Battle of the Brewers, the final round of a three-part-series where we give brewers two random ingredients to use for a new brew. Here are the details for both events.

Meet the Brewer: Elevation Beer Co.
June 21st / 6:30pm / Pay Per Pint
Front Range BBQ / 2330 West Colorado Ave, Colorado Springs
Facebook Event Page
Elevation Beer Co. is one of the newest breweries in Colorado (they aren't even a month old yet!) but we got our first taste of Elevation at the Saison Festival. We were very impressed with the Saison and Farmhouse Ales they brought to town and we knew we needed to bring these guys in for a Meet the Brewer session. It is quite apparent that this brewery is experimenting, having loads of fun, and they're doing it right too. The brewery is located in Poncha Springs, just outside Salida, and I bet they'll become a regular stopping point, for many of us Colorado Springers, on our drives into the mountains. Come to Front Range BBQ to celebrate this new brewery, meet brewer Christian Koch, he's bringing some fun and experimental beers, as well as a couple of the flagships. Check out the list of beers below!
The Beers:
- Apis IV - 10.7% - Belgian Quadrupel made with local carmelized honey
- Cabernet Barrel Aged Apis IV - see above beer
- First Cast IPA - 6.5% - Hop-forward, west coast style IPA
- Mount Blanca - Belgian Saison - 5.5% - A light and refreshing Saison with white wheat
- Imperial Saison - 8% - A stylistic oddity, reminiscent of a Saison mixed with a Trippel and a Belgian Strong Golden Ale
Battle of the Brewers: Final Round
Sat. June 23 / 4pm Sharp! / $5 cash
Brewer's Republic / 112 N. Nevada, Colorado Springs
Facebook Event Page
We started with eight local breweries, each brewer was given two random ingredients to add to a beer, you did a blind tasting of all the beers and decided which ones were best and which breweries advanced to the next round. We're now at the third and final round, the last two brewers are duking it out on June 23rd. We congratulate Shamrock Brewing and Lone Tree Brewing on getting this point, your beers have been wonderful thus far, but only one brewer will win in the end. What are the two random ingredients for the beer this time? A bottle of wine per 5 gallons of beer, and the use of wood (but not oak).
Join us on Saturday, June 23rd at 4pm. You will get to decide, in a blind tasting, which beer is best and who will be crowned the 2011 Battle of the Brewers Champion. For $5 you will get a sample of each beer, one vote, a chance to win some door prizes AND a half pint of your choosing from two specialty kegs. It's going to be a good time, We'll see you there!
Wondering what the previous rounds were like? You can see the info here and here and our video recap.

Top Ten Beer Spots in the Colorado Springs Area
Our list of the Top 10 Beer Spots in the Colorado Springs area has been updated. We posted the Top 10 places to drink/buy beer last year and thought it would be a good time to update the list since a lot of changes have happened in the last six months since our last top 10 post.
We decided not added any new spots to this list, but in the upcoming months, we will visit new spots and revisit old spots so we can make another updated list at the end of the year. Let us know what you think of our ranking and if you agree that these are the best places to drink beer in Colorado Springs. If you have further suggestions, please let us know.

Blax Fox Brewing Will Set Up Shop in Denver
I'm literally running out the door to catch a flight so I'm just pasting some answers to some questions that John Schneider, of Black Fox Brewing, just sent me. It's true, it's true, they are officially setting up shop in Denver and they are leaving pretty soon. We will be totally sad to have one of our very favorite breweries in all of Colorado leave town and head North but we know that this is a good move for these guys. John you better send your beer down here! We wish you the best of luck and you know we'll come and visit you soon!!!
My questions for John:
My questions for John:
Thank you Jon Boling / A Jon Boling Memorial Bike Ride Tonight
We would like to express our condolences to the Boling family after the sudden and tragic accident that took Jon Boling's life nearly a week ago. Jon, known simply as JB to many, was a craft beer rep in the Colorado Springs area, was a very kind and gentle-hearted man, loved good beer, and loved rafting. On Sunday, June 3rd, JB set out in a group down the Salmon River and shortly afterwards there was an accident. He wasn't in the 38 degree water long but party members were not able to revive him. JB was 34 and left a wife and family. JB thank you for your service in the beer industry and for the recent memories.
There is a JB Memorial Bike Ride tonight at McCabe's tavern, starting at 6pm. People will hang out there for a while, then ride over to Front Range BBQ for more of the same. There will be donated beer from New Belgium, Left Hand, Ska Brewing and Avery. All proceeds from the purchase of these items will go to Jon Boling's Memorial Fund. The Memorial Ride is public.

Beer Thoughts: Elevation Beer Co. Apis IV
Beer Info:
From Elevation: "Apis, the genus of the honeybee, is in homage to the hardworking honeybees of Colorado that provided the caramelized honey we use in making this fantastic beer. IV is a nod to the four people who came together to turn Elevation from a dream into a reality as well as to the beer style this Belgian Dark Strong Ale loosely adheres to." The bottle calls it a Quadrupel, which is a dark strong Belgian Ale, and it sits at a large 10.7% ABV. Elevation is a new brewery near Salida, CO, and have been open for only about a month.
Beer Thoughts:

Burning Can, Dogs, Bikes, and Running...All Packaged Together in One Festival
Last weekend we attended the annual Burning Can festival in Lyons, organized by Oskar Blues Brewery. In many ways the festival was unique and felt very much like it belonged in Colorado - we had the beer portion which celebrated canned beer from 35 breweries across the US, no bottles or kegs allowed, a 5k run beforehand, camping, a bike competition, dog competition and more. In fact, all these things were connected as part of the Lyons Outdoor Games. It all worked together in it's own Colorado way. Really though, the more I think about canned beer the more it seems to make sense in correlation with outdoor sports and lounging. I'll tell you what I mean...

Some Upcoming and Noteworthy Beer Dinners
I've noticed that Colorado Springs loves beer dinners. We've attended quite a few over the last year and perhaps there are three important rules I've noticed for beer dinners: 1 - Good beer and good cheese can make an extraordinary pairing and also makes a perfect first course. 2 - Beer mixed with fruit juice can make for the best mimosas. 3 - People are quieter at the beginning of the dinner but by the end of dinner everyone is friends with everyone and no one wants to go home.
With that in mind, I'd like to mention a few upcoming beer dinners that I believe deserve your attention.

Catching Up with Trinity Brewing - An Interview About All the Upcoming Plans and Releases
If you've paid attention to Trinity Brewing lately you've probably noticed that not only did they expand their brewery by 300% but they've been talking about a number of different new brews. They've got plans for a beer called Oh Face, Capitaine, and a Black Fox collaboration. Not only that but they've already released some awesome Saisons including the Three Flowers and the Saison du Tomme. I imagine this season has been very exciting for brewer and president Jason Yester. I caught up with Jason via email to ask him about some of the new brews and new things happening around the brewery. Here's our conversation:

Front Range Beer Trip Day 02: Longmont to Loveland and Back
Our Front Range beer trip continues. We had an epic first day, and on the second day we didn't slow down any. This day we drove from Boulder to Loveland and back down to Longmont where we spent the night. Keep track of the journey here. For some reason folks keep asking what the purpose of the trip was. There doesn't need to be any purpose for a beer journey, except to enjoy beer! Well, we also wanted to check out new spots, meet up with people we've been in contact with via email and twitter, and talk to breweries about some of the events we're putting on. We'll start this post with what was Colorado's newest brewery (at the time we visited).
City Star Brewing / Berthoud, CO
We had heard some really good things about City Star Brewing, and they'd only been open for 11 days when we visited. The brewery turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. They are a small brewery in the downtown area of a little town called Berthoud, in between Longmont and Loveland. During the first few days, they sold out of three of their six beers. By the time we got there, they were back up to four. We showed up before they opened though, so we didn't get to see it in full swing but the team of Whitney Taylor and brewer John Way showed us around and let us hang out.

Whiskey For My Men, Beer For My Horses (2012)
As an artist and beer geek I've been intrigued by Whiskey for My Men, Beer for My Horses, but I was out of town when it happened last year so I haven't attended. Unfortunately I'm going to be gone again this year. But I like the sound of it. Put Friday, June 29th on your calendar.
Whiskey for My Men, Beer for My Horses is a western-themed fundraiser for the Fine Art Center. There's a beer and whiskey tasting, cash bar, music, and an exhibition all at once. The lineup of Colorado brewers and distillers include Pikes Peak Brewing, Colorado Mountain Brewery, BierWerks Brewery, KBKB, Distillery 291 (Colorado Springs) and Spring 44 (Loveland). With entry, you can sample as much as you'd like. They've also got the J. Miller Band playing country music and they're going to have a new western-themed exhibition up in the gallery titled Wild Horses with work by Luis Jimenez, Myron Wood, and Lawrence Barrett.

Oskar Blues Brewery and our local bar, Brewer's Republic, put together a field trip to visit a series of Oskar Blues venues, including the OB Hops and Heifers farm, the Oskar Blues production brewery, and OB Liquids and Solids. The bus came by early in the morning and picked up about 30 dedicated drinkers for what would prove to be not only an educational day, but one of the most memorable beer adventures we've had. A Visit to Odell's 2nd Annual Small Batch Festival
Odell Brewing Co. was founded back in 1989 in Fort Collins. That means if you are 23 or younger, they've been making glorious beer since before you were born. They've gotten pretty good at it too. Just like anything, perfection comes after a lot of practice. Most breweries have a pilot system: a smaller brewhouse which allows experimentation and a chance to fine tune a recipe before making hundreds of barrels of a beer (aka small batch). Experimentation is the focus of this festival with beers named Tiger Blood and Totes McGotes. Most of these beers were brewed on that small 5 barrel pilot system
that's nestled in between the larger tanks in the brew house. We paid the festival a visit, made the long trek from Colorado Springs and the beers did not disappoint.

Front Range Beer Trip Day 01: "The Rest of the Day"
We are finally getting back around to posting more photos and information from our four day beer journey up Colorado's Front Range. For our journey, we wanted to visit new breweries, establish contacts,
say hi to a few folks, and to meet a bunch of people we'd only been in
touch with via email...and have a blast. You can see our first stop at AC Golden, which really needed it's own post. For this post, we're still just talking about the first day of the trip, where we visited five more breweries!
Golden City Brewery / Golden, CO
We had a schedule but that quickly dissipated; after our time at AC Golden that schedule was already off so we had to just go with the flow a bit. We were in Golden, and we've heard really good things about Golden City Brewery, which they humorously call "Golden's 2nd largest brewery."

6th Edition Colorado Beer Map - Better Than Ever
This morning in the mail I received a complimentary 6th Edition Colorado Beer Map from the Beer Drinker's Guide to Colorado. I just opened it up to have a look and decided that it would be worth mentioning to you all because it's actually really cool, and I think many people would find it very handy. It looks like Fermentedly Challenged gave it a really good review. I would like to add my 2 cents as well.

Beer Happenings the Next 2 Weeks in the Area
There are a few beer happenings in the area over the next two weeks, so we thought we would send the info your way. This isn't necessarily everything though, there's events coming up that might get booked up, and things get put onto our calendar at the last minute, so be sure to check our local beer events calendar too. Have a look and I hope to see you out!

Engingeering Brewer's Yeast to Produce Diesel
![]() |
| Beer? Not quite. Try fermented sugar water that produced diesel instead of alcohol |
I was surprised when they mentioned the manipulation of Brewer's Yeast. The way the yeast basically works is that you feed yeast a sugary water and it produces CO2 and alcohol. In beer we allow the CO2 to pass through an airlock, and the liquid becomes alcoholic, and we drink the alcoholic beverage in a pint glass.
